Bona Toner White
Pre-measured pigment additive. Tint your Bona primer or lacquer white -- build the colour, keep the grain.
What it is
Bona Toner is a water-soluble pigment additive in a pre-measured 100 ml bottle, part of Bona's newer Additive+ range. You mix it straight into a Bona waterborne primer (like Classic UX) or lacquer to control the colour of the floor on the job, instead of stocking a shelf of pre-pigmented products. It comes in White, Natural, Amber and Black. The White version creates or boosts a whitewashed, lighter, toned-down look -- best on lighter species -- and you build the intensity with extra coats.
Why installers use it
- One additive, custom colour. Tint a standard primer or lacquer on demand instead of carrying separate pre-pigmented tins.
- Build it gradually. The level of white is controlled through how many coats you tint -- more layers, more white.
- Keeps the grain. Tonal control while the timber still reads as timber (within reason -- it is not a paint).
- Cuts yellowing on recoats. Useful when you want to knock back the amber pull on an existing floor.
- Pre-measured. One bottle to 5 L -- no guessing at dose on site.

How to apply
Sand to bare timber and dust off. Add one 100 ml bottle of Toner White per 5 L of primer or lacquer and mix thoroughly. Apply evenly along the grain. Let it dry, light intercoat abrade, then assess the tone -- add another tinted coat if you want more white. Finish with two coats of a clear matt or extra-matt Bona topcoat. Always test on a sample board first; the result depends on the timber species (Australian hardwoods will not go as white as oak or ash).
Bona Toner White is not classified as hazardous under CLP/GHS -- no signal word, no hazard pictograms. The one flag: it contains trace isothiazolinone preservatives (BIT + CMIT/MIT) and may produce an allergic reaction on sensitive skin. Wear gloves and safety eyewear, ventilate, and keep it out of drains and watercourses.
First aid: eyes - rinse 10+ minutes; skin - soap and water (not solvents); do not induce vomiting if swallowed. Full detail: Bona Toner White Safety Data Sheet (PDF).
