What trade products offer that retail products do not

Published wear ratings

Bona Traffic HD publishes a Taber abrasion result of 1.5 mg per 100 revolutions (SIS 923509). Bona Mega publishes 5 mg per 100 revolutions. None of the Bunnings retail products publish a wear rating to any recognised standard. Without a published number, there is no way to compare durability in a specification or quote.

Species-specific primers

Australian hardwoods like blackbutt, spotted gum, tallowwood, and ironbark have high tannin content that can cause adhesion failure and discolouration if the primer is not formulated for them. Bona Prime Intense is purpose-built for these species. Bunnings does not stock species-specific floor primers.

Two-component (2K) options

Bona Traffic HD and Bona Wave 2K are two-component finishes that chemically crosslink for significantly higher hardness and chemical resistance. No 2K floor finish is available at Bunnings. For commercial jobs, high-traffic residential, or kitchens and bathrooms, a 2K finish is a meaningful step up in performance.

Matched system from subfloor to maintenance

Bona provides a tested chain: adhesive (R850, R848T) to primer (Prime Intense, Classic UX) to topcoat (Traffic HD, Mega, Wave 2K, Traffic GO) to care product (Spray Mop, care concentrates). Every product is tested against the others for adhesion and compatibility. The Bunnings products are standalone -- there is no matched primer, no matched adhesive, and no matched maintenance system.

Trade support

Bona offers a technical support line, on-site visits for problem jobs, and species-specific application guidance. Bunnings provides general retail assistance but not trade-level product support for flooring contractors.

When Bunnings products work fine

Not every job needs a trade-grade system. Fair call -- for these situations, Bunnings retail products are a reasonable choice:

• DIY single-room job. A homeowner refinishing one bedroom on a standard species like Tasmanian oak or pine. The stakes are lower and the products are readily available.
• Touch-up or furniture. A single coat on a small area, a table top, or a piece of built-in cabinetry. Overkill to use a 2K trade product here.
• Forgiving species. Species with low tannin and stable grain (pine, Tasmanian oak, some maples) are less demanding on the finish system. A species-specific primer is less critical.
• Budget is the only factor. Cabot's Cabothane at $28.73/L is the cheapest option on this list. For a job where the client has explicitly chosen price over durability, the product exists and works.

When the job needs trade product

• Professional multi-room contracts. A contractor's reputation is attached to the finished floor. Published durability data, a matched system, and trade support reduce callback risk.
• High-tannin Australian hardwoods. Blackbutt, spotted gum, tallowwood, ironbark, and similar species need a primer that is formulated for their tannin content. Skipping a species-specific primer on these timbers risks adhesion failure, bleed-through, or discolouration.
• Commercial or high-traffic areas. Hallways, kitchens, living areas in family homes, retail, hospitality, aged care. A 2K finish with a published wear rating is the professional standard for these applications.
• Specification and warranty. Architects and builders increasingly specify a finish system by brand and product. Bona Traffic HD appears in architectural specifications; Cabot's Cabothane does not.
• Long-term client care. Handing the client a matched care system (Bona Spray Mop + Bona cleaner) extends the floor's life and reduces recoat frequency. The Bunnings finishes have no matched maintenance products.
