Bona vs Loba
Two respected European finish systems, different strengths. Here is an honest breakdown for contractors deciding between them.
Bona: the system approach
Bona builds an end-to-end floor finishing system. From primers (Prime Intense for high-tannin species, Classic UX for general use) through topcoats (Traffic HD, Traffic GO, Mega, Wave 2K) to stains and maintenance products, every product is formulated to bond to the next. That eliminates compatibility guesswork.
Bona's range covers every residential and commercial scenario. Traffic HD is the industry benchmark for commercial durability. Mega is a reliable single-component residential topcoat. Traffic GO gives a faster cure for same-day turnaround jobs. Wave 2K sits between Mega and Traffic HD for heavy residential at a more accessible price.
Loba: German engineering, strong 2K options
Loba is a German manufacturer with a smaller but focused range. The standout products are Loba 2K Duo (a two-component water-based finish with excellent hardness) and Invisible Protect (a reactive finish that gives bare-timber aesthetics with full polyurethane protection). Loba also offers primers and oils, though the Australian range is narrower than the European catalogue.
Contractors who run Loba typically value the 2K Duo's hardness and the Invisible Protect's natural look. The system works well, but availability in regional NSW is limited compared to Bona.
Where to buy each
- Bona full range: Sand-Aid, Toronto NSW -- NSW's only Bona Premier Dealer. Full primer, topcoat, stain, adhesive, and maintenance range in stock. Delivery across Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Central Coast, and Sydney.
- Loba: Alex Lind Flooring Supplies in Padstow, Sydney is the main dealer in NSW. They stock both Bona and Loba, plus Hermes and Norton abrasives.
- Both systems (online): TSFA (tsfa.com.au) carries a national online catalogue with multiple brands including some Bona and Polycure products.
When to pick Bona
- System compatibility matters. Every Bona product is tested against the rest of the range. No guesswork on primer-to-topcoat adhesion.
- High-tannin Australian hardwoods. Prime Intense is purpose-built for blackbutt, tallowwood, spotted gum, and ironbark. Loba's primer range does not have a direct equivalent formulated for Australian species.
- Commercial jobs. Traffic HD is the benchmark commercial topcoat in Australia. Tested to EN and ASTM wear standards, specified by architects, and backed by a documented maintenance program.
- Regional NSW supply. Sand-Aid keeps the full range in stock in Toronto NSW. No waiting on Sydney freight.
When to pick Loba
- Bare-timber aesthetic. Loba Invisible Protect delivers a natural, uncoated look that Bona's range does not replicate exactly. For clients who want the floor to look and feel like raw timber, Invisible Protect is a strong option.
- 2K hardness priority. Loba 2K Duo is a very hard finish. Bona Traffic HD and Wave 2K are both excellent 2K options, but some contractors prefer the Loba cure profile.
- Already running Loba. If the existing floor is Loba, recoat with Loba. Cross-system recoats are risky.
