Handley Urethane vs Polycure Duothane

Two solvent polyurethane systems used by Australian floor sanding contractors. Different chemistry, different workflow. Here is how they compare.

TL;DR Handley Urethane is a 1K solvent polyurethane available in Gloss, Satin, Low Sheen, and Matt -- all inter-mixable -- with Rapid Seal as the fast-dry primer. Polycure Duothane is a 2K solvent system (Part A + Part B) with Timberseal as the sealer. Both come in 20L trade drums. Handley coverage is 8-10 m2/L; Polycure runs 10 m2/L. Full cure for both is 7-10 days. Sand-Aid stocks Handley Urethane and Rapid Seal. For Polycure, check the distributor locator at urethanecoatings.com.au.

Handley Urethane: the 1K approach

Handley Urethane is a single-component solvent polyurethane. No mixing, no pot life to manage, no waste from unused mixed product at the end of the day. Open the tin and apply.

The standout feature is inter-mixable sheens. Gloss, Satin, Low Sheen, and Matt can be blended to hit any sheen level the client wants. This gives contractors precise control over the final appearance without needing to stock a separate product for every sheen point.

Handley Rapid Seal dries in approximately 30 minutes, allowing a fast start to the coating system. Coverage on the sealer is 7-8 m2/L, which is tighter than Polycure Timberseal, but the fast dry time means the first topcoat can go down sooner.

Polycure Duothane: the 2K approach

Polycure Duothane is a two-component system. Part A and Part B are mixed 1:1 before application. The 2K chemistry provides a chemical crosslink during cure, which can deliver higher hardness than a 1K system.

Duothane comes in High Gloss only. For lower sheens, Polycure's system uses Monothane (1K moisture-cure) as the final coat over Duothane base coats. This means a job that needs a satin or matt finish requires two different products in the system -- Duothane for the base coats and Monothane Satin or Matt for the final coat.

Polycure also offers Duothane Fast A, which can be mixed with Part B for a quicker-drying first coat (30-60 minutes). In cold conditions, the Fast A ratio can be increased to 2:1 against Part B to compensate for slower cure.

Monothane vs Handley: the 1K moisture-cure comparison

Both brands also have a 1K moisture-cure option. Polycure Monothane cures by absorbing moisture from the atmosphere. It is available in Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Satin, Matt, plus budget Silver Gloss and Silver Satin variants. Coverage is 10 m2/L across the range. VOC runs from 325 g/L (Gloss) up to 560 g/L (Matt).

Handley Urethane is also a 1K product but with inter-mixable sheens in a single formulation type. The Polycure Monothane range requires selecting the correct sheen product and understanding that low-sheen variants (Semi-Gloss, Satin, Matt) are final-coat-only products that must go over a Gloss or Duothane base.

Sealers compared: Rapid Seal vs Timberseal

Spec Handley Rapid Seal Polycure Timberseal
Type 1K solvent sealer 1K rapid-dry solvent sealer
Dry time ~30 minutes 30-60 minutes
Coverage 7-8 m2/L 10-12 m2/L
Pack size 20L 20L
VOC Not published on web 550 g/L aromatic hydrocarbons
Edge bonding Standard sealer function Marketed as "virtually eliminates edge bonding" when worked into T&G seams
Filler use Standard Can be mixed with fine sawdust to create a slurry filler

Polycure Timberseal has higher coverage (10-12 m2/L vs 7-8 m2/L), but Handley Rapid Seal has the tighter dry window at approximately 30 minutes. Timberseal's edge-bonding reduction claim is a genuine advantage on tongue-and-groove flooring.
