Sanding Your Own Floor?
Owner-builders, renovators and weekend warriors -- yes, you can buy from Sand-Aid. Same Bona products the trade uses, same advice on the phone.
Same products, no gatekeeping
Sand-Aid is a trade supplier first -- that's why most of the site reads like a contractor's catalogue. But the door's open. You don't need a credit account, you don't need an ABN, you don't need to be Bona Certified. Walk in, ring up, or order online. Pay retail and you still get the products and the advice.
If you're going ahead, here's the path
1Identify the timber
Different species need different prep and different primers. Blackbutt and tallowwood need a tannin-control primer or the topcoat goes grey-green. Oak and Tasmanian oak don't. If you don't know what species you're looking at, take a photo and ring 1300 950 551 -- you'll get an answer in two minutes.
2Pick the finish
Use the Primer Picker to choose between Classic UX and Prime Intense, and the right Bona topcoat to go on top. Or use the Grit Sequence Picker to plan the sanding before you start.
3Work out how much you need
The Coverage Calculator takes the floor area and the product and gives you the litres + the pack sizes to order. It already adds a 10% waste buffer because real jobs use more than the bottle says.
4Hire the right machine
Sand-Aid doesn't hire machines but Toronto and Newcastle hire shops do. Ring us before you book and we'll tell you which machine to ask for and what grit belts to bring -- not all hire-shop sanders are equal.
5Read the trade guides
The same articles the contractors read. Sanding marks, picture framing, dust nibs, tannin bleed -- the things that go wrong on a first-time job and how to avoid them.
6Order
Browse the shop for the products you need. Pay online. Pickup from 6 Sara Street, Toronto NSW 2283 or arrange delivery on the call.
Common DIY questions
Do I need a Bona Certified card to buy Bona products?
No. Anyone can buy. Bona Certified contractors get extra factory training and direct manufacturer support, but the products are the same. Sand-Aid sells to anyone in NSW who walks in or rings up.
Do I need a credit account or ABN?
No. Pay retail with a card on the day. No account setup, no credit application, no minimum order.
Will the products work without a professional belt sander?
The coatings will. Bona Mega, Wave 2K, and Hard Wax Oil are forgiving on a first-time roller pass. The sanding is the harder part -- a hire belt sander is non-negotiable for anything bigger than a single small room. Don't try to sand a whole house with a random orbital from Bunnings; it'll take a week and look it.
Can I get the same advice contractors get?
Yes. Brad's been doing this for 24 years. Ring with the species, the floor area, what you're trying to achieve, and what gear you've hired -- you'll get the spec on the call. No sales pitch, no upsell to products you don't need.
What if I stuff it up?
Most first-job mistakes are recoverable. Sanding marks can be re-sanded. Tannin bleed can be sanded back and re-primed. Dust nibs can be screened and recoated. The only mistakes that can't be fixed are over-sanding the boards thin or gluing a floor with the wrong adhesive. If you're worried about either, ring before you do anything.
Is it cheaper than hiring a contractor?
Sometimes. For a single small room (say 15-20 m²) on a forgiving species, DIY can be cheaper if you already own basic tools and you have a free weekend. For anything bigger or more complex (high-tannin hardwoods, stairs, parquet, multiple rooms), the cost of hire machine + product + your time often comes out close to or more than a contractor quote -- and a contractor does it in a day instead of a fortnight. Ring with the specifics and you'll get an honest answer about the maths.
Do I need delivery or can I pick up?
Both work. 6 Sara Street, Toronto NSW 2283 for pickup, Mon-Fri 7-4. Delivery available across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley and Central Coast -- ring for cost.
Ring before you start
Two minutes on the phone before you spend a cent will save you a weekend. Tell us the species, the room size, and what you're trying to achieve.
