Handley Rapid Seal
The fast-drying solvent primer that pairs with the Handley Urethane topcoat range. Same-day sealing and topcoating. Holds the timber at a lighter colour.
What it is
Handley Urethane Rapid Seal is a single-component solvent-based timber primer from Handley Industries, built to work as the sealing coat under Handley Urethane Gloss, Satin, Low Sheen or Matt. It's the "rapid" part of the range -- Handley quotes around 30 minutes walk-on dry time depending on ambient temperature, which is what lets a contractor seal a floor in the morning and start topcoating the same afternoon instead of losing a day to primer cure.
Why use Rapid Seal under Handley Urethane?
- Same-day turnaround. 30-minute walk-on window means seal + two topcoats in a single day on most room sizes. Without a fast-dry primer a solvent poly job can stretch into a second day.
- Lighter timber colour. Rapid Seal holds the natural tone of the timber at a lighter shade than topcoating bare wood directly. Useful when the client wants less of the amber shift that solvent polyurethane naturally carries.
- Even topcoat. A sealed floor gives a smoother, more predictable first topcoat pass -- less patchy absorption, less flash-off, less witness marks where the board edges drank differently.
- Matched system. Rapid Seal is formulated by Handley Industries to work with the Handley Urethane topcoats. Pairing a Bona water-based primer under a solvent topcoat (or vice versa) introduces compatibility risk -- the matched system takes that risk off the table.

How to apply
Sand the floor to a fine grit -- run our grit picker for the SIA belt sequence on the species you're working. Dust off thoroughly. Apply Rapid Seal at 7-8 sqm per litre with a lambswool applicator or brush. Let it dry through the walk-on window (around 30 minutes at 20°C). Light intercoat abrade if grain has raised. Then two coats of your chosen Handley Urethane sheen per the drying times on the topcoat tin.
Rapid Seal vs applying topcoat direct to bare timber
You can technically apply Handley Urethane straight onto freshly sanded bare timber without a separate primer coat. Some installers do on simple jobs. The tradeoffs:
- With Rapid Seal. Lighter final colour, faster same-day turnaround, more even absorption on the first topcoat, tighter spec.
- Without. Fewer steps, one less product to carry, slightly deeper amber colour. But the first topcoat has to do both the sealing and the film-building work, which usually means more product consumed per square metre and a longer wait before the second coat.
For most jobs bigger than a single small room, Rapid Seal pays for itself in time saved and a better-looking finish.
