What each does well
Bona Traffic HD
Traffic HD is the commercial benchmark in Australia. The 1.5 mg/100 rev wear rating (tested to SIS 923509) is one of the hardest published results in the water-based category. VOC at 50 g/L is low enough for occupied-building work. The 24-hour walk-on time means a commercial site can be handed back quickly. Every spec is published on the Bona website and TDS, so contractors can quote confidently and architects can specify it without chasing paperwork.
Traffic HD integrates with the full Bona primer system -- Prime Intense for high-tannin species like blackbutt and spotted gum, or Classic UX for general use. That system compatibility removes adhesion risk between primer and topcoat.
Polycure WaterKote 2K
Polycure is an established Australian manufacturer (Urethane Coatings Pty Ltd) with decades in the floor finish market. WaterKote 2K is their premium water-based product, positioned against Traffic HD. Coverage at ~10 m²/L is competitive. The brand has a loyal following among contractors in NSW and Victoria, particularly those who also run Polycure's solvent range (Monothane, Duothane).
Polycure's strength is the breadth of their solvent line and the familiarity Australian contractors have with the brand. WaterKote 2K is a legitimate 2K water-based finish -- the question is not whether it works, but how much the manufacturer publishes about its performance.
The honest take
Both products do the job. The key difference is transparency.
Bona publishes wear ratings, exact VOC, recoat windows, walk-on time, and full cure on their website and TDS for every product. That matters when quoting commercial work, meeting green building specs, or answering a client who asks "what exactly is going on the floor?"
Polycure does not publish wear ratings or exact VOC figures for WaterKote 2K on their website. That is not necessarily a reflection of the product's quality -- it could perform well. But it means contractors cannot independently verify claims without requesting a TDS directly. For architect-specified commercial jobs where the spec needs to be documented, that gap creates extra work.
If transparency and published third-party test data matter for the job, Traffic HD has the edge. If the team already runs Polycure and trusts the product from experience, WaterKote 2K is a reasonable choice -- just be prepared to chase the TDS for spec documentation.
When to pick Bona Traffic HD
- Commercial jobs requiring documented specs. Architects and building managers often need published wear ratings, VOC data, and test certifications. Traffic HD has all of that on record.
- High-tannin Australian hardwoods. Traffic HD paired with Prime Intense is the go-to combination for blackbutt, tallowwood, spotted gum, and ironbark. The primer is specifically formulated to block tannin bleed on these species.
- Fast turnaround. 24-hour walk-on and 2-3 hour recoat windows keep the job moving. For commercial sites where downtime costs money, that scheduling certainty matters.
- System compatibility. Traffic HD is tested against every Bona primer and maintenance product. No guesswork on inter-coat adhesion.
When to pick Polycure WaterKote 2K
- Already running Polycure. If the existing system is Polycure, recoating with WaterKote 2K keeps the finish consistent. Cross-system recoats carry adhesion risk.
- Established relationship with Polycure distributor. Contractors who source through a trusted Polycure dealer and have years of successful results on the product may not need published web specs -- they already know how it performs.
- Residential work where architect specifications are not required. On residential jobs where the contractor is choosing the product (not an architect), prior experience with WaterKote 2K is a valid reason to stick with it.
