Bona Toner Black

Full-coverage black pigment additive. Tint your Bona primer or lacquer for a dark floor or a bold contrast.

What it is

Bona Toner Black is a water-soluble pigment additive in a pre-measured 100 ml bottle, part of Bona's Additive+ range. Unlike the semi-transparent White, Natural and Amber toners, Black is full coverage -- you mix it straight into a Bona waterborne primer or lacquer to darken the floor or set up a bold black look. You build the depth with how many tinted coats you run.

How to apply

Sand to bare timber and dust off. Shake the bottle hard for 60 seconds, then add one bottle per 5 L and stir thoroughly. Standard schedule is two primer coats with the toner, then one to two clear lacquer coats; for a deeper black, add toner to a lacquer coat as well. Apply each coat so the start, stop and overlap points don't line up with the last. Always test on a sample board first -- the result depends on species, primer and lacquer. Note Bona Toner is for colouration, not for turning a dark species light (or the reverse) -- for that, Bona Craft Oil 2K is the better tool.

Safety (from the Bona SDS)

Not classified as hazardous under CLP/GHS -- no signal word or pictograms. Contains trace isothiazolinone preservatives (BIT <0.036% plus CMIT/MIT) and may produce an allergic reaction on sensitive skin; prolonged contact can irritate. Wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate, and keep out of drains and watercourses.

First aid: eyes - rinse 10+ minutes; skin - soap and water (not solvents); do not induce vomiting if swallowed. Full detail: Bona Toner Black Safety Data Sheet (PDF) · Toner TDS (PDF).
